BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

This two year course is equivalent to 1 full A-level or two AS levels.  (Minimum age for entry onto this course is 16 years old)

Why should I do this course at Theatre Peckham?
Doing a BTEC at Theatre Peckham is a unique opportunity to undertake high quality performing arts training within a professional theatre company.  Our BTEC National Award is taught by highly trained and skilled professional working performers and practitioners who aim to provide a creative, challenging and exciting course that is directly informed by a wealth of industry knowledge and experience.   If successful at audition for the BTEC National Award, you will have the opportunity to perform in a new piece of Musical Theatre as part of your first year assessment.  This will be created and directed by Theatre Peckham’s Artistic Director, Theresa Early.  You may also get the chance to audition for Theatre Peckham’s own Musical Theatre repertory, and if successful, to work as a paid Theatre Peckham Apprentice on a full professional Theatre Peckham production. At the end of your first year, we intend to invite an audience of industry professionals and agents to a Showcase demonstrating the best of your work for 2009/10.

Auditions and interviews for this course will be held on Thursday 9th July and Thursday 3 September 2009 at Theatre Peckham, between 5-8pm.  Details will be sent to you on receipt of your application.

What does this course involve?
This two year course provides you with the opportunity to develop your performance skills through the Core units of ‘Musical Theatre’ and ‘Performing to an Audience’.   In your second year, you will take a range of Specialist units from the Musical Theatre Pathway.    This year’s BTEC National Award students did units in ‘Singing for Actors and Dancers’, ‘Dance Performance’ and ‘Acting Auditions’, for example.

How is the course taught and assessed?
Teaching will be through weekly specialist evening workshops and additional rehearsal.    You will be given a BTEC National Award handbook at the beginning of the course, containing all of the assignments for the year (usually one assignment per term for all three units you are working towards completing) You will be assessed on performance, rehearsal and on structured response tasks (research, self and peer evaluation etc) depending on the grading criteria for the units you are studying.  Overall grades of Pass, Merit or Distinction will be awarded on the successful completion of all of your assignments at the end of the two year course.  External moderation by the awarding body Edexcel ensures that National Award assessment standards are consistently and fairly applied

What qualifications do I need before I begin the course?
You will need 2 GCSEs, one of which must be English, OR successful completion of a BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts OR sufficient performance experience gained in a variety of settings (Youth theatre, school productions, professional work, for example.)

Will I have to do homework?
You will have to keep a LOGBOOK throughout the course and you will be given dates by which this must be submitted to your tutor for review and assessment. This is a vital part of a Level 3 course and can help to determine your final grade.

What are the career opportunities open to me if I take this course
This course would help you to audition for higher level vocational training and employment in the Performing Arts industry.  Other career opportunities could include drama teaching, community musical theatre practice and theatre in education work, following further appropriate training,
