Workshops and courses at Theatre Peckham

Theatre Peckham works with schools and community groups to create exciting and innovative projects across the performing arts. Taught by highly experienced and professional workshop leaders, these schemes aim to develop both performance skills and personal confidence for all participants. Projects can be tailor made to varied requirements, from a short-term dance class to an after-school club: from a singing session to a long-term, curriculum-based project.

Current projects include:

“Teach Speech”
This is an exciting new development at Theatre Peckham. Staff have been working with a Speech Expert from London University’s Central School to develop a new curriculum which will teach clear, correct use of the voice and English pronunciation to young people from 0-20 years. We will be rolling out this work in all the lessons taught by our staff from September 2010, with children taking part in the Pathways project.

Pathways Project
A long-term programme, focused on speaking and listening, which aims to engage a diverse range of children with the national curriculum using drama and musical theatre. A success for seven consecutive years now, this project continues to have a significant impact with a wide range of children including those learning English as a second language and those with special educational needs. The Pathways Project culminates in a show performed by the children and hosted at Theatre Peckham for invited guests, parents and teachers. From September, our “Teach Speech” project will also introduce children to new techniques of making the special sounds of the English language.

Inclusion Project
Created to engage children who may experience difficulties in school life. The project focuses on building communication, confidence and self esteem through music and theatre, with the opportunity to perform in a show at Theatre Peckham.

Creative and Media Diploma
In partnership with STEP and Southwark Education.
A two-week intensive musical theatre programme with local secondary schools. This year’s students performed His Side, Her Side at The Unicorn Theatre.

INSET
Designed for teachers to cover a wide range of provisions and key stages. Drama, dance, and musical practices are employed to develop skills and work towards teachers’ professional goals.

Workshops / After School Clubs / Taster sessions
We can deliver in-school or after-school long-term projects, or bespoke workshops tailored to your needs. All open access classes offered at Theatre Peckham can be adapated for your school.

Other opportunities

Mistaken Identity Theatre Company
Building on the success of Mistaken Identity’s debut devised production One AM - a new piece of theatre that emerged from last year’s Youth Forum - our young people are now in rehearsal for their second piece as part of our ‘Young Summer
2010’ devising project for 15 – 19 year olds. Two of our young Forum members are also directing this year’s show, as well as creating it from scratch.

Work Experience – Be Our Friend!
We’re always keen for people to help out with Theatre Peckham’s productions, family events and administration. Some roles require adults to have current CRB certificates, but everyone can be involved in some way. Please contact us on 020 7708 5401 if you’re interested in getting involved. Open to ages 14+.
