Callout: Futureland Schools Project

Imagine a day 50 years from now. What would it look like? Futureland enables students to experiment and play with this concept, and through it develop their literacy, oracy, and writing skills, building the connection between creativity and wellbeing. Working alongside acclaimed writers of colour, students will develop a showcase.

Our three-year project, Futureland supported by the St Pauls School foundation Via the Mercers Company will be working with 2 Southwark based secondary schools to improve oracy and literacy skills in schools, focusing on working with creatives of colour to demonstrate opportunities for a more representation in the industry.

We will also work with you to co-design a digital platform to support teachers to engage with more diverse and representative material in the classroom as well as encourage young people to interact with new texts and literary material at home. This project will work with 30 year 8 students per school.

What to Expect

1. Workshops: 10 creative workshops led by a diverse collective of creatives working in the industry. Through play, young people will develop their literacy and oracy skills gaining skills and knowledge of potential careers as poets, writers, authors, storytellers and more.

2. Class trip to Theatre Peckham Christmas show: Each December your school will receive 100 free tickets to Theatre Peckham’s much anticipated Christmas show. In 2024 this will be a twist on Peter Pan!

3. Showcase: Each school will exhibit and share their learning from this project through an exhibition or performance of their work. This will take place in our 150 seat theatre at Canada Water Library and we would encourage you to invite peers, family and friends of the students. Schools will also be encouraged to share what their students have done with the school community through the school newsletter and website.

4. Online Resource: A tailored online resource to support young people to engage with writing and reading over holiday periods and outside of the sessions. The tool kit will be fully accessible including video and interactive content to engage young people.

5. 4 Twilight sessions: Support for teachers in implementing the digital resource. The teachers across two schools will come together to create session plans utilising the resources created. They will also feedback on the activities in the digital resource to strengthen it.

Timeline: Starting in September 2024

  • September– April: 10 play sessions led by different creatives. Sessions will take place in the school and at Canada Water Library Theatre
  • December: Annual Trip to attend Theatre Peckham’s Christmas show
  • June –July: 5 sessions to develop a showcase followed by a performance at Canada Water Library Theatre
