Casting details

Efe (Female, 14–17 years) Young girl in her early/mid teens. Nigerian/Caribbean parentage. South London through and through. Intelligent but lacking self-confidence. Bookish, a bit absent minded, a little geeky; has her own sense of fashion. Not naive – but does not march to the same beat as her peer group. Excellent belt singing voice. Looking for a performer over licensing age who can play younger.

Manny (Male, Transgender – male, Non-Binary, 16–25 years)

A living, breathing mannequin with a keen fashion sense. Their slender frame makes them perfect for modelling clothes. Probably has a touch of the male model about them with a demonstrative and dramatic self-expression. Has slipped into the comfort zone of simply being eye candy but wants to be taken more seriously and feels they do not quite have the smarts to be treated as a well-rounded character. Excellent Tenor singing voice. Puppetry skills a bonus. Looking for a performer over licensing age who can play younger.

Cyri (Female, Transgender – female, 16–25 years)

Highly advanced form of robot life. (Identifies as female)Can gather and retain tons of information and data at a stroke. Has also been programmed to serve the Queen population and generally formulate positive solutions to complicated problems. Unfortunately not programmed to comprehend human emotion but will do their utmost to serve and protect human life. Excellent character mezzo singing voice. Puppetry skills a bonus. Looking for a performer over licensing age who can play younger.

Mane Man (Male, 16–25 years)

A lion and pretending “road man”, late teens/early 20 something in human years. Very imposing presence which he uses as a way to cover for the fact that deep down, he’s not your typical tough guy. He fears lots of things, is quite sensitive, eats only vegan food and is also secretly very intelligent—from time to time, he drops these massive pearls of wisdom on his friends, completely messing with their perception of him. Excellent Baritone-Base singing voice. Puppetry skills a bonus. Looking for a performer over licensing age who can play younger.

Nanna Emiola/Aygum (Female, 35–60 years)

Nanna Emiola is a 60 something Nigerian woman. Efe’s grandma. Runs the takeaway shop and is an expert cook and business woman. Very much the matriarch of the family unit: strong, no-nonsense, straight talking woman. She may not always express it but she loves all her grandchildren equally and any tough talk to them is purely in aid of helping them prepare for the adult life awaiting ahead. Aygum is the evil Obeah Queen who rules the Ammay district in Ozanda. In her 40s or 50s. She is ruthless, selfish, narcissistic and full of delusions of grandeur; may well be compensating for some deep seated insecurity. In short, your classic panto villain type. Excellent mezzo singing voice.

Narrator/Grandpa Hulis/Professor Woolley (Male, 35–60 years)

Narrator of the story. Charismatic actor who can build a strong rapport with the young audience. Strong comic timing and a playful warm nature. Grandpa Hulis. 60 something Caribbean gent. Efe’s grandfather. Kindly fellow. Can be firm but is much more measured and calm than Emiola. Seen by his grandkids as the wise old sage who’s slightly more sympathetic than his wife. Professor Woolley. 50/60 something scientific genius originally from Tottenham. An expert in all the sciences: physics, biology, chemistry. Also a keen inventor. Very wise, warm, and sympathetic. Also very absent minded—the type who’d put his briefcase on top of his car before setting off for work then forget he’d put it there. Since accidentally landing in Ozanda, he’s created the persona of The Wonderful in part to keep the evil queens at bay. Excellent character singing voice.
