Exhibition: Black British Figures by Varaidzo

30 Sept - 4 Nov
Black British Art

About the show

Varaidzo is a writer, editor and artist. She was previously the Digital Editor at Wasafiri and the Arts & Culture Editor at gal-dem. She has presented radio shows for BBC Radio 4, Reprezent Radio and Worldwide FM while she produces and hosts her the podcast Search History.

In her personal work, she has a particular interest in documenting stories of the African diaspora in the digital age, through film, art, audio and fiction. Black British Figures is no exception to that – combining her own research and illustrations to highlight the stories of the unspoken figures of Black Britons throughout the ages, with a particular focus on pre-Windrush era stories.

Varaidzo’s work on this powerful and informative archival project has been recognised by the likes of the Metro and Vice UK. This is the first time highlights from Black British Figures is being showcased outside of the digital realm, in Varaidzo’s current base in Peckham. Inspirational, detailed captions alongside the illustrations reveal the story behind the figure – come down to TP throughout our Young, Gifted & Black season to find out more.
